Miss Rumphius Innovative Thinking = Overcoming and Persevering in an Age of No Child Left Behind

 

 

This presentation will showcase the efforts of the Miss Rumphius winners of the past and present by highlighting examples of ways these innovative teachers successfully integrated technology into the literacy curriculum.  This talk will showcase past and present Miss Rumphius winners’ contributions as they continue to overcome the current challenges of NCLB.

Dr. Denise Johnson is an associate professor of reading education at the College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, USA where she is the University Professor of Teaching Excellence. She received her Ed.D. in reading from the University of Memphis, Tennessee. She has worked as an elementary classroom teacher, a middle school reading specialist, and a Reading Recovery teacher. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in literacy education and reading/language arts methods and graduate courses in children's literature and conducts research on the integration of technology into pre-service and in-service education courses and within elementary classrooms. Her articles on literacy and technology, teacher education, and children's literature have been published in a variety of journals and she is active in several professional organizations.  She has a forthcoming book, The Joy of Children's Literature, to be published by Hougton Mifflin in 2008 and another book, Teaching Literacy in Fourth Grade, to be published by Guilford later this year.
